Silverstone BTCC race day dawns for Hampshire racers

The 9th round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) is taking place this weekend at the Northamptonshire circuit of Silverstone. The BTCC championship uses the short Silverstone National circuit which means there are 3 straights connected with a few corners, so top speed is important, but handling also matters.

The Saturday saw the 26 racers head out for qualifying in the afternoon 30 minute session.

For the Hampshire racers - Rob Collard & Nick Foster (WSR/EBayMotors) and Dan Welch (Welch Motorsport with Sopp & Sopp) the free practice sessions had different issues for the drivers with Nick Foster suffering from engine issues meaning that he could only qualify in 22nd place.

Rob Collard, who after free practice said "Whilst we were not running with new tyres we should only be able to make up 3 tenths, so top 10 not likely". This was after only being able to set the 18th fastest  time in FP2.

In qualifying Rob managed an early quick time for 5th place and though the action was manic held onto 8th place at the flag.

Dan Welch was still suffering with the injuries he sustained at the previous round at Rockingham (fractured pelvis), and after the first lap in FP1 was  in tears from the pain. After some additional padding was added to his seat and some further medication he managed to set some respectable times.

In qualifying he managed to set the 14th best time, even though he still had further setup refinements needed.

So the races start at 11:57 and with sunny conditions we should see 3 frantic races during the day
